Latest Movie List 2012! If you own an Apple computer and desire a display that shares your computer's design, you should only have two similar options, info is Apple's 27" Thunderbolt display. At a cost of $999, it isn't really exactly a cheap option. Does it justify its cost?
Apple's new 27-Inch Thunderbolt display is, for the most part, not just a new display. It is a very similar as the older 27" LED Cinema Display, except it now includes Apple's Thunderbolt technology.
Still, which could not be a trival new feature. After all, the pr announcements say Thunderbolt will be the coolest connection ever invented, so perhaps this device is worth a close look.
Apple's new Thunderbolt display may not offer a lot with regards to new display panel technology, but i am not saying it is behind the periods or lacking in quality. Besides simply being big, it includes everything that most users could possibly want. LED backlighting enables more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and much better black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology provides for vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to provide some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.
Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" name from this new product, it could still apply. This is a monitor that's geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos as well as video games. The use of high-gloss glass rather than a matte surface is evidence of that. It brings about more glare, but additionally drastically increases contrast. Images have the symptoms of real "pop" and suffer from grainy details if viewed closely.
There are monitors that, based on technical measurements, provide more accurate colors. Few, however, can match the subjective brilliance of the display.
Monitors are certainly not required to give a lot of extra ports if they are cheap, but since the price rises beyond a couple of hundred dollars, extra connections become expected. Apple carries a reputation for poor connectivity in comparison to similarly priced competitors, although the Thunderbolt display does buck the buzz somewhat, it can be better.
The main connectivity feature, the Thunderbolt port, is in effect only Mini DisplayPort. Thunderbolt's more appealing feature is its bandwidth, but that doesn't offer any advantage here. It's also possible to daisy-chain multiple Thunderbolt devices employing a single port, but in the lack of compatible devices currently in the marketplace, it's tough to imagine this advantage being commonly used. The only common application I can imagine is daisy-chaining two displays to a single MacBook Pro, which can be said to be possible (I have not tested it personally).
You'll also receive 3 USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, plus an Ethernet port. These ports can behave as extensions of the connected Mac, which can be handy sometimes. MacBook Airs, for instance, don't have Ethernet available even while an option, but can use an Ethernet connection via this display.
What's lacking is, obviously, HDMI and DVI. The lack of USB 3.0 ports is also a downer, though many competitors have yet to offer USB 3.0 as well. The connections available on the Thunderbolt display is practical if you are connecting it to your Mac, however, if you aren't, it is going to seem rather limited.
The speakers on this display really are a 2.1 system which supplies reasonably adequate sound. However, as with any single built-in monitor speakers ever made, the lack of proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 can provide better quality of sound, and you will probably want to purchase a real solution if you do not almost never tune in to music, watch movies online or play games. If you don't watch movies or play games though, you probably wouldn't be buying this monitor.
To enable FaceTime, a microphone along with a webcam are included. The webcam quality is more effective than most built-in monitor webcams and also many inexpensive stand-alone webcams. Microphone quality is adequate for FaceTime and web calls, but isn't a option for recording a podcast.
Although the display's large stand is stable and stylish, it only tilts slightly, and there's no height, swivel or pivot adjustment. For some users, this can be going to be a big deal, and almost all other monitors priced above $400 offer these characteristics. This is one instance where Apple's dedication to simple design seriously limits something.
There's no question that the Thunderbolt display, like the previous 27" LED Cinema Display, provides a top-notch viewing experience. Apple has not yet skimped on display technology, and even though the glossy glass panel could possibly be annoying in bright rooms, it provides jaw-dropping visuals in ideal lighting.
It's a shame, then, the display is average by almost every other measure. Limited connectivity and a deficiency of ergnomic adjustments are major dings against any monitor priced above $400, nevermind one that is just a buck shy of $1000. If you wait for sale, you can actually grab a 30-Inch Dell Ultrasharp for similar dough.
Given poor people value, you can't really rate this product as anything superior to average inspite of the excellent image quality. The main reason to acquire this display is just not because it's the top value but instead because you own a Mac already, and you need to stay inside Apple's ecosystem.
